Ever wonder why each year Savannah has one the largest St Pat’s Day parades in the world?
Well, just watch the short video below. It’s about the amazing relationship between the citizens of Savannah and the people of Ireland and how the Irish famine of the 1840s and 1850s was the catalyst to enduring partnerships, including continuing trade.
The video below was produced by Salt Table’s Dave Legasse in his role at the time as Chairman of the Georgia Grown Commission and as Chairman of Visit Savannah. A special part of trade mission trip to Ireland was to visit a replica of the “Dunbrody” famine ship, assist the museum with some projects, and meet with the President of Ireland to encourage more trade and tourism partnerships between Georgia and Ireland.
“The Dunbrody”, and its sister ships brought thousands of Irish people to Savannah. They stayed and prospered and some of the descendants continue to successfully farm the fertile soil of Georgia. This video is also played on a continuous loop at the Dunbrody Famine Ship Experience Museum in County Wexford, Ireland.
