Dave’s thoughts about Salt Water Taffy: As a kid a trip to beach took forever, although in my case I lived only 30 minutes away. Then another half hour in very slow traffic looking for a “good” parking space. Then unpacking the car with blankets, baskets of food and drinks.
Finally, that mad dash to freezing cold water. (In New England, even in the Summer, the water makes your ankles hurt.) But, the warm sun, the smell of the ocean and sun tan lotion, and the sound of the waves and sea birds left a lifelong impression. And, there was one more special treat I could count on, Salt Water Taffy. Although I couldn’t figure out why it’s name contained “salt”. The chewy chunks of sweetness were anything but salty. I could also count on an argument with the other kids over who got what flavor, or which was best.
